I was born in the U.S. (Cleveland, Ohio!) some decades ago, but soon after that returned with my family to Israel, where I was raised. I was a pretty creative kid, and so in elementary school and high school I tried painting, sculpting, photography, music and writing poetry but never thought seriously of becoming an 'artist'. "It's Luft Gescheft" my father used to say in Yiddish, which means 'air business', i.e. something which is not serious or significant.
Only After my military service, and a short stint as a psychology student, I realized that I do want to be in the arts, in some form or other. I started with music: I bought an electric guitar, wrote some songs, found people to play with and started a Rock band, later to be called The Historians. At the same time, I worked as an usher in the local Cinematheque, which made me discover the art of filmmaking. So I went to Tel Aviv University Film School to study film directing. There, in addition to doing some still photography, I wrote, produced, directed, edited and acted in several short films, most notably A Nightmare on Bialik Street which won some prizes and critical acclaim. After graduation, I tried my luck in the local film and TV industry, but I wasn't satisfied yet. Something else was calling me: the wish to be in front of the cameras rather than behind them! I joined an acting agency, and landed a few commercials and short films. I liked it, but felt I needed to learn more. One thing led to another, and in January 2000 I found myself going to New York City to study acting at the famed Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute. I came only for three months, but stayed ever since…
I ended up attending both the Lee Strasberg Institute and the Stella Adler Studio of Acting, which gave me the skills and courage to start an international acting career: I've been acting in films, theatre, TV, and commercials. At some point, I guess due to the creative nature of this place, I found my way back to those other passions of mine from the past: I did a few musical projects, started a new Rock band - The Ellermans and revived my old band The Historians. I exhibited my photographs in Berlin, Germany and New York. I wrote and produced my own movement-theatre show - Beautiful World… - with an ensemble of 9 actors and dancers. And most recently, my film A Nightmare on Bialik Street has been getting screenings in New York, Cannes, and other film festivals around the world!
Along this artistic journey, and maybe as a result of it, I have also embarked on a spiritual 'quest' to find the answers to the big questions of life (or rather the small questions of my life…). This quest has taken me on an amazing path of study and exploration, which included, among others: Yoga, Indian Vedanta philosophy, Tibetan Buddhism, vegetarianism and animal welfare activism, and most recently - Landmark Education. Where will this journey take me next? I have no idea. But since it's all 'Luft Gescheft' anyway, I guess we'll just have to wait and see where the wind blows…
