On Hunting – letter to H. NYC. 2007
… as for hunting, your arguments sound very intelligent and convincing and even scientifically accurate. But, they sound, if I may be honest, as excuses which you yourself don't believe in... ;-)
I think harming, let alone killing any living creature, is the most terrible act we can do. From a fly to a deer to a human being. Taking the life of another living, breathing, feeling creature is something I just cannot accept or justify... (and that is coming from a guy who was 4 years in the army, and found himself in some situations ready and even willing to kill somebody with his own hands... never did, but could have).
I love animals, and think they are the cutest, purest, harmless creatures you can ever imagine. I sometimes love people as well. Therefore I taught myself not to kill them, eat them, scare them, or harm them in any way possible. I still hurt people, emotionally, but try to be aware of it and not do it again...
I think that once you start killing a certain kind of animal, or species, there is no way to stop. Where do you draw the line ? Why kill cows and not cats ? Why kill deers and not dogs ? Why kill cows and deers and not people ? Why kill terrorist-people and not all bad people ? Why kill bad people and not gypsies, communists, gays and lesbians ? Why kill gypsies, communists, gays and lesbians, and not kill all Jewish people ? Why kill Jewish people and not all people who are different than you ? Do you see where I am getting at...?
I also believe in karma, and KNOW that whatever we do to others comes back to us... and I wouldn’t want anything like that to come back to you... my Indian Vedanta teacher says that the reason for nature killing hundreds of thousands of people each year (tsunami, Katrina, etc.) is that we, humans, harm nature and kill MILLIONS of animals each year (we not only kill, but torture. abuse. ruin lives and families. massacre). Karma. It all comes back to us...
Oh wow... sorry to be so harsh and straightforward. But you touched upon a subject - animal's rights - which is one of the most important to me and one which I am very passionate about... one day, if I have enough money and power, I will stop all killing of animals...
